The crosspost has long since died out, but the thread has run for more than two years in one form or another. By this time, almost any thread can turn into Songs About Masturbation. It erupts spontaneously, something like an electronic social disease. A few notable examples: Turning Japanese, The VaporsDancing With Myself, Billy Idol I Touch Myself, Divinyls Longview, Green Day Blister in the Sun, Violent Femmes She-Bop, Cyndi Lauper Blinded by the Light So, how am I supposed to know when a song is about masturbation? Sometimes you can tell by the title, but the best way to tell is in the lyrics.The most obvious example of a song that directly mentions masturbation is Darling Nikki, by Prince. But that song really isn't about masturbation, per se. No, it takes something more. Songs that prominently mention sudden blindness, magazines, hands or "self" are good candidates, but given that most popular songs are about sex at one level or another, it can be hard to tell. Here's an example from a Duran Duran song. You decide whether or not you think this song is about masturbation:"The Reflex is a lonely child waiting by the park/ The reflex is in charge of finding pleasure in the dark/ And watching over lucky clover, isn't that bizarre/ Every little thing the Reflex does leaves an answer with a question mark." So, think about it. What the hell does it mean? "Lonely ... pleasure in the dark?" Maybe it is. Maybe it isn't What does it have to with Generation X?
